Transitioning from high school and to college brings up a lot of questions that may be hard to answer on your own. Pasadena City College gave me an opportunity to attend a week long program called Math Jam. This opportunity helped me view the college from a student's point of view. Although I was nervous in starting a new chapter, Math Jam had helped me with a prelude. Math Jam helped me refresh my math skills as we were still in our "Summer mode" with lots of help from my professor, tutor, and classmates, it gave me the confidence to face math challenges over the semesters. I have met so many people, and learned a lot of useful information that I will use throughout my attendance at Pasadena City College. Personally, I am a timid person when meeting new people. Stepping in to class, I didn't know anybody, and I felt awkward seeing everyone around me talking to their close friends. As class was about to begin, my professor did a meet and greet activity in which we had to move around and meet students around us. As we began the math lecture, I knew what to expect because I already had the foundation and was college ready. I attended a charter high school that focuses on being college ready, I learned many skills to be successful. So when my professor was lecturing fast, it didn't slow me down in learning the topics because in high school I was taught to think and write critically. My tutor, Gabbi, taught me simple tips in order to find the solutions to problems. As we broke into tutor groups, I started to blossom out and communicating to other classmates. Although math is not my strongest, I still like communicating and helping my peers around me. With worksheets, and talking to others to find the solution, it had helped me to become an open minded person. I had struggled to be an open minded person to say the answer whether the answer was right or wrong. This program helped me be prepared, sprout out, and talk with confidence, even if I'm not right. Meeting my coach and attending workshops gave me a sense of reality that you're going to start a career you will enjoy. These workshops gave me a lot of information to help me adapt at PCC, whether it's knowing about your financial aid preferences or knowing that there's staffs acquainting you whenever you're discouraged. I will use all the resources I have learned about wisely in order to help me succeed. I have anxiety problems, and I always need someone to talk to when I'm feeling discouraged, but knowing that there's coaches available, I don't have to go and talk to the counselors and have to wait for an hour. Being a part of Pathways program, has taught me so much information in order to survive your first year of college. The Math Jam experience has helped me meet longtime friends, coaches, and being college ready. This is an experience of what I'll expect when I begin the Fall Semester.
